IAT 2027 Complete Guide: IISER Aptitude Test Syllabus, Pattern and Preparation

What IAT is

The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is the single entrance route into the IISERs' five-year BS-MS programme. It is a 60-question paper with 15 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, based on the Class 11 and 12 NCERT syllabus, with negative marking.

Why it feels different

IAT questions are shorter than JEE Advanced but more analytical than NEET. They test whether you can apply a familiar concept to an unfamiliar situation, often in a single step of clean reasoning rather than long computation.

How to prepare alongside JEE or NEET

• If you are a JEE aspirant, your Physics, Chemistry and Maths are already covered — add basic NCERT Biology reading.
• If you are a NEET aspirant, your Biology and Chemistry are covered — add Class 11-12 Mathematics fundamentals.
• Everyone should solve past IAT papers; the question style is the real syllabus.

Selection reality

All four sections are attempted by every candidate, so your weakest subject caps your score. Two weeks of focused work on that one subject usually moves an IAT score more than another month on your strongest.

After IISER

The BS-MS programme is research-first: integrated masters, early lab exposure, and a direct pathway to PhD programmes in India and abroad. Choose it if you want a science-research career rather than a professional degree.

Eligibility, application and campuses

Admission to the IISER BS-MS programme runs through IAT, a computer-based test conducted for candidates who have passed Class 12 with science subjects and meet the minimum marks stated in that year's brochure. Applications, exam city choice, admit cards and results are all handled on the official portal, iiseradmission.in, which is where you should verify dates, fees, syllabus and eligibility before planning anything — these details are revised each admission cycle.

Seats are spread across the IISERs at Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati, with counselling done centrally through the same portal. Preference order matters: campuses differ in research groups and department strength more than in degree value.

Section-wise preparation

All four sections carry equal weight, so the plan is about coverage, not favourites.

• Physics. Mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics and modern physics, tested through short reasoning rather than long derivations. Focus on being able to set a problem up correctly in one or two steps.
• Chemistry. Physical chemistry calculations stay light, so the return is highest in inorganic periodic trends, bonding and coordination chemistry, plus organic reasoning on structure and mechanism.
• Mathematics. Calculus, algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and probability. NEET aspirants need the most work here, and basic NCERT-level fluency is usually enough.
• Biology. NCERT text is the syllabus. JEE aspirants should read the Class 11 and 12 books once properly and then work through statement-based questions.

An eight-week plan alongside boards

1. Weeks 1-2. Close your weakest subject at NCERT level only. This is where the largest score movement is available.
2. Weeks 3-4. One past IAT paper, untimed, with full solution review. Note the reasoning patterns that repeat.
3. Weeks 5-6. Sectional practice, fifteen questions at a time, timed at about twenty minutes per section.
4. Weeks 7-8. Two or three full papers under exam conditions, plus a written error list before each new attempt.

Because IAT falls close to board exams for most candidates, keep the load small and the practice specific. Two focused hours a day for eight weeks is a realistic and sufficient commitment for someone already preparing for JEE or NEET.

Attempt strategy with negative marking

With negative marking in place, section order and skipping discipline decide the score. A workable approach:

• First pass: answer only what you are confident about, across all four sections.
• Second pass: return to questions where you can eliminate two options.
• Leave anything that is a blind guess between four options — the expected value is negative.

Aim to finish the first pass with time to spare rather than to touch all sixty questions. Candidates who clear IAT usually have high accuracy on a moderate number of attempts.

Common mistakes

• Preparing three subjects well and one not at all, which caps the total no matter how strong the rest is.
• Treating IAT like JEE Advanced and buying heavy problem books; the paper rewards clean reasoning, not computation stamina.
• Skipping past papers until the last week, when they are the best available description of the question style.
• Ignoring the official brochure and relying on forum summaries for eligibility or pattern.

Is the BS-MS the right choice?

The programme is research-first: five integrated years, laboratory exposure from early semesters, and a standard route into PhD programmes in India and abroad, often supported by an INSPIRE-type scholarship for eligible students. Choose it if you want a career in scientific research or academia. If your goal is a professional engineering or medical degree, a parallel JEE or NEET plan should stay primary and IAT should remain the low-cost second option it is designed to be.
