What IAT is

The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is the single entrance route into the IISERs' five-year BS-MS programme. It is a 60-question paper with 15 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, based on the Class 11 and 12 NCERT syllabus, with negative marking.

Why it feels different

IAT questions are shorter than JEE Advanced but more analytical than NEET. They test whether you can apply a familiar concept to an unfamiliar situation, often in a single step of clean reasoning rather than long computation.

How to prepare alongside JEE or NEET

  • If you are a JEE aspirant, your Physics, Chemistry and Maths are already covered — add basic NCERT Biology reading.
  • If you are a NEET aspirant, your Biology and Chemistry are covered — add Class 11-12 Mathematics fundamentals.
  • Everyone should solve past IAT papers; the question style is the real syllabus.

Selection reality

All four sections are attempted by every candidate, so your weakest subject caps your score. Two weeks of focused work on that one subject usually moves an IAT score more than another month on your strongest.

After IISER

The BS-MS programme is research-first: integrated masters, early lab exposure, and a direct pathway to PhD programmes in India and abroad. Choose it if you want a science-research career rather than a professional degree.
