About JEE Advanced

Introduction

JEE Advanced is a computer-based examination consisting of two compulsory papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2) held on the same day. It is known for non-routine, multi-concept problems and a question pattern that changes every year.

Conducting Authority

Conducted by one of the zonal IITs each year under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

Purpose of the Examination

To select candidates for B.Tech, B.S., B.Arch, Dual Degree and Integrated M.Tech programmes at the 23 IITs, and for IISc/IISER/RGIPT/IIPE admissions that use the JEE Advanced score.

Eligibility Criteria

Who can appear for JEE Advanced?

Educational Qualification: Must be among the top 2,50,000 successful Paper 1 candidates of JEE Main (category-wise) and must have appeared in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Candidates admitted to an IIT earlier are not eligible.
Age Criteria: Generally born on or after 1 October, 25 years before the exam year (five years relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates).
Nationality: Indian nationals, OCI/PIO and foreign nationals. Foreign nationals are outside the reservation framework and are counted over and above the seat matrix.
Reservation Policy: SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10% and PwD 5% horizontal reservation across IIT seats.

Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced pattern & marking scheme

Two papers of 3 hours each, both compulsory. Each paper covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with a mix of single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs, numerical-value and matching-list questions. The exact structure changes every year.

Duration

3 hours per paper (Paper 1 morning, Paper 2 afternoon). Both papers are mandatory.

Marking Scheme

Full marks for a fully correct response; partial marks are awarded in multiple-correct questions when only correct options are chosen.

Negative Marking

Applies to single-correct and multiple-correct sections (typically −1 or −2). Numerical-value sections usually have no negative marking. Refer to the current year's instructions.

Registration Process

How to apply, step by step

1Qualify JEE Main Paper 1 and appear within the category-wise top 2,50,000 candidates.
2Log in to the JEE Advanced portal with your JEE Main application number and password.
3Complete the registration form, choose exam cities and upload the required certificates.
4Pay the registration fee online.
5Download the registration confirmation and later the admit card.

Counselling Process

From result to admission

1JoSAA conducts common counselling for all IITs along with NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
2Register and fill choices of IIT programmes in strict order of preference.
3Seats are allotted across six rounds based on your JEE Advanced All India Rank and category.
4Pay the seat acceptance fee and complete online document verification for the allotted seat.
5Select Freeze / Float / Slide for subsequent rounds; report physically to the institute at the end.
6Candidates seeking B.Arch at IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee must additionally qualify the AAT.
