Most families buy CBSE tuition for the wrong reason. The trigger is usually a disappointing unit-test mark, and the purchase is extra classes in whichever subject produced it. But CBSE boards are rarely lost to a lack of teaching hours. They are lost to thin NCERT coverage, to answers that do not match the marking scheme, and to a Class 11 and 12 plan that never decided whether the student is aiming at boards alone or at boards plus an entrance exam. This guide sets out what CBSE online tuition should actually deliver from Class 8 to Class 12, how to judge a program before paying, and what it costs at Prepkunj.
What the CBSE exam actually rewards
CBSE has moved steadily towards competency-based assessment. In recent sessions, roughly half of the Class 10 and Class 12 question papers has been made up of competency-based questions — case studies, source-based items, application and reasoning — with about a fifth as objective-type questions and the remainder as short and long constructed responses. Internal assessment carries a defined share of the total in most subjects, and the pass mark is 33 per cent. CBSE has also announced that Class 10 board examinations will be conducted twice in a year, with the first session in the earlier part of the year and a second session following it.
Confirm every one of those details for your session against cbse.gov.in and the sample question papers published on cbseacademic.nic.in. CBSE revises the scheme regularly, and the sample paper for your year is a more reliable guide than any coaching brochure.
Two consequences follow. First, memorising the textbook is no longer enough, because a competency question puts a familiar idea in an unfamiliar situation. Second, presentation is worth real marks: CBSE evaluates against a marking scheme with defined value points, and a student who knows the physics but writes an unstructured answer loses marks that a slightly weaker student will keep.
What changes at each stage
Class 8 to 10. This is where the habits form. The syllabus is manageable, so the useful work is conceptual clarity in Science and Mathematics, regular written practice, and building the discipline of solving without looking at the solution first. For students who will later attempt NEET or JEE, Class 9 and 10 are also where the arithmetic fluency and algebraic confidence that entrance exams assume either get built or do not.
Class 11. The hardest year, and the most commonly mishandled. The jump in abstraction in Physics and Chemistry is steep, school teaching moves fast, and there is no board exam at the end to force revision — so gaps accumulate silently and surface in Class 12. A Class 11 plan needs chapter-wise testing precisely because nothing else is checking whether the student has kept up.
Class 12. Two goals at once for most Science students: the board exam and an entrance exam. The syllabus overlap is large but the question styles differ, and the calendar is unforgiving. What works is a single integrated plan that teaches the concept once and then trains both formats — board-style structured answers and MCQ-style application — instead of two separate courses competing for the same evenings. Pre-board sample-paper practice with actual evaluation against the marking scheme matters more in this year than any other input.
What CBSE online tuition must contain
NCERT-first teaching, mapped chapter by chapter
Every topic should be traceable to its NCERT chapter and to the way CBSE frames questions on it. NCERT in-text and exercise questions appear in boards, directly or lightly modified, so a program that treats NCERT as optional background reading has misread the exam.
Answer-writing trained against the marking scheme
Ask directly: are written answers evaluated, by a person, with feedback on structure and value points? This is the single most neglected part of board preparation and the easiest place to gain marks. A program that only reports MCQ scores cannot tell you why your three-mark answers are getting two.
Competency and case-study practice as a standing format
Case-based and source-based questions should be a regular weekly format, not an appendix at the end of the year. Ask to see a sample set.
Pre-board sample-paper series with evaluation
CBSE publishes sample question papers and marking schemes for each session. A serious program builds a timed pre-board series on them, evaluates the scripts, and returns a per-question breakdown of where marks were lost.
Doubt support with a stated response time
School doubts pile up quickly at Class 11 and 12 level. Ask what the promised response time is, whether it is a live session or a forum, and who answers — a subject teacher or a support agent.
Reporting that reaches parents
For school-stage students, progress reporting is not a nicety. Monthly reports on attendance, test performance and specific weak chapters let a parent intervene while it still matters.
Questions to ask before you pay
- How many live hours per subject per week, and at what time — does it fit the school day in our city?
- Is answer-writing evaluated by a teacher, and can I see a marked sample?
- How many chapter tests and how many full-syllabus or pre-board papers are included?
- Is the plan board-only, or board plus entrance — and how is the extra load scheduled in Class 12?
- What is the batch size, and are recordings available for missed classes?
- Are printed books included in the fee or charged separately?
- Who teaches each subject, and for how long have they taught the CBSE scheme?
A term-by-term plan that works
Term one — stay level with school. Learn each chapter as school reaches it rather than ahead of or behind it, and finish every NCERT exercise for that chapter in the same week. Take the chapter test while the chapter is fresh. Write at least two long-form answers a week by hand, timed.
Term two — build the paper skill. Continue chapter-wise learning but add one full-syllabus paper a fortnight from the material covered so far, evaluated properly. Start case-study sets weekly. Begin an error log split into three columns: did not know, knew but misread, knew but wrote badly. The third column is usually the largest and the fastest to fix.
Final ten weeks — practise the exam, not the syllabus. Two timed papers a week from CBSE sample papers and previous years, at the same time of day as the exam, evaluated against the marking scheme. Revise only from your error log, NCERT diagrams and formula sheets. In the final fortnight, stop new material entirely and rehearse the full three-hour sitting, including the reading time and the order in which you will attempt sections.
CBSE tuition across Indian cities
CBSE is the most geographically spread cohort Prepkunj teaches, and local context genuinely changes the plan. In Mumbai, long commutes mean evening slots have to be short and recordings have to be reliable. In Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, CBSE students sit alongside a dominant Intermediate stream, and a batch that mixes the two ends up serving neither — the chapter order is different. In Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Lucknow, the CBSE base is strong on NCERT coverage and mainly needs problem-solving depth and exam temperament rather than more syllabus. In Latur, Nagpur and Kota-influenced towns, the pressure is to run entrance preparation so hard that the board exam is treated as an afterthought, which is how a good rank arrives with a mediocre Class 12 percentage attached to it.
Our city pages explain how timings, chapter sequence and test load are adjusted for each of these: see CBSE tuition across Indian cities, and CBSE reviews from students and parents for verified feedback.
What CBSE tuition costs at Prepkunj
Prepkunj's CBSE plans are live online tuition in Science and Mathematics, and hard-copy books are not part of these plans — so the whole discounted fee is taxable and GST at 18 per cent applies to it.
Class 8 to 10 is tuition ₹47,000 plus a ₹3,000 test series, ₹50,000 before a ₹5,000 discount, so ₹45,000 payable, plus ₹8,100 GST — ₹53,100 in total for the year. Class 11 is tuition ₹57,000 plus the ₹3,000 test series, ₹60,000 before the ₹5,000 discount, so ₹55,000 plus ₹9,900 GST — ₹64,900. Class 12 is tuition ₹62,000 plus the ₹3,000 test series, ₹65,000 before the ₹5,000 discount, so ₹60,000 plus ₹10,800 GST — ₹70,800. The test series can also be taken on its own for ₹3,000 plus GST.
Every figure comes from the same live pricing model that drives the CBSE course page, so the breakup published there is always current. Class 8, 9 and 10 students who also want NTSE and Olympiad training should compare the Foundation program, and Class 11 and 12 Science students aiming at an entrance exam should look at how the board plan folds into the NEET or JEE course rather than running two plans in parallel.
Start with the free resources
Prepkunj's Self Study section carries free chapter notes and 30-question chapter tests for CBSE Classes 8 to 12, and the Know Your Level diagnostic gives a subject-wise report in a single sitting. Use both before you pay for anything: if the report shows one weak subject rather than four, you need targeted help, not a full package.
Board marks still matter after the boards
Families sometimes conclude that the Class 12 percentage is irrelevant once an entrance exam is in play. It is not. Several engineering and science admission routes still apply a board-marks eligibility condition, many state and institutional scholarships are decided on the Class 12 aggregate, and applications to universities abroad are read on the transcript rather than on an entrance rank. A student who scores well in the entrance exam but carries a weak Class 12 sheet narrows their own options a year later, at a point where nothing can be done about it.
The practical implication is scheduling, not extra hours. Decide in the first month of Class 11 whether the target is boards plus entrance, and if it is, build one calendar that covers both — concept once, then two question formats, with the pre-board weeks protected from entrance mock load and the entrance mock weeks protected from board revision. What fails is the improvised version, where the board syllabus is postponed until January and then compressed into six weeks against a paper that rewards written practice.
When tuition is the wrong purchase
Sometimes the honest answer is that a student does not need tuition. If school teaching is sound, the NCERT exercises are being finished, and the marks are dropping only in one paper because of careless presentation, then answer-writing practice with evaluation solves the problem at a fraction of the cost of a full course. Equally, a student who is not attending school classes attentively will not be rescued by adding a second set of classes on top. Take the diagnostic, read the report honestly, and buy the narrowest thing that fixes what it shows.
Warning signs
Be sceptical of programs that promise a percentage. Be sceptical of any Class 12 Science plan that ignores the entrance exam the student is also sitting, or the reverse. Be sceptical of large recorded-lecture libraries sold as tuition, of tests reported only as scores with no per-question breakdown, and of any brochure describing a paper pattern without naming the CBSE session it applies to.

Frequently asked questions
- Is online tuition effective for CBSE boards?
- Yes, when it does the things a board exam rewards: NCERT chapter-by-chapter teaching, written answers evaluated against the marking scheme, weekly case-study practice, and timed pre-board papers with a per-question breakdown. A recorded-lecture library alone will not raise board marks because nobody is correcting how you write.
- What does the CBSE paper pattern look like now?
- Recent Class 10 and 12 papers have been roughly half competency-based questions, about a fifth objective-type and the rest short and long constructed responses, with internal assessment carrying a defined share and 33 per cent as the pass mark. Always check the sample question paper for your session on cbseacademic.nic.in, since CBSE revises the scheme.
- Which class needs tuition the most?
- Class 11. The jump in abstraction in Physics and Chemistry is steep, school teaching moves quickly and there is no board exam at the end to force revision, so gaps accumulate quietly and surface in Class 12. Chapter-wise testing through Class 11 is what catches them in time.
- Can one plan cover both boards and NEET or JEE?
- It should. The syllabus overlap is large; only the question formats differ. Teach the concept once, then train both formats, and protect pre-board weeks from entrance mock load and mock weeks from board revision. What fails is postponing the board syllabus to January and compressing it into six weeks.
- Do Class 12 board marks still matter if I have a good entrance rank?
- Yes. Several admission routes apply a board-marks eligibility condition, many scholarships are decided on the Class 12 aggregate, and universities abroad read the transcript rather than an entrance rank. A weak Class 12 sheet narrows your options a year later, when nothing can be done about it.
- What does CBSE tuition cost at Prepkunj?

Class 11 is ₹55,000 plus ₹9,900 GST, ₹64,900 in total, and Class 12 is ₹60,000 plus ₹10,800 GST, ₹70,800 in total. Hard-copy books are not part of these plans, and the test series alone is ₹3,000 plus GST.
- Are free CBSE resources available?
- Yes. The Self Study section carries free chapter notes and 30-question chapter tests for CBSE Classes 8 to 12, and the Know Your Level diagnostic returns a subject-wise report in one sitting, so you can buy the narrowest thing that fixes what it shows.
