CBSE Class 12 Maths: unit-wise marks

UnitMarksWhat to prioritise
Relations & Functions8Types of functions and inverse trigonometry — short, predictable questions.
Algebra10Matrices and determinants — easy marks with practice.
Calculus35Continuity, derivatives, integrals, area and differential equations — nearly half the paper.
Vectors & 3D Geometry14Dot/cross product, lines in space — formula-heavy but reliable.
Linear Programming5Graphical method — one full question, almost always scored fully.
Probability8Conditional probability, Bayes' theorem — often a case-based question.

Theory paper is 80 marks plus 20 internal assessment. Confirm the current year's curriculum at cbseacademic.nic.in.

CBSE Class 12 sample papers: how to use them

CBSE publishes official sample question papers (SQPs) with marking schemes every year. Download them from the official site, then use them in this order:

1. Map the paper to units

Mark each question in the official sample paper by unit. You will see calculus dominates — plan your time the same way.

2. First paper: untimed

Solve with full working and compare line-by-line with the marking scheme to learn how step marks are given.

3. Next papers: 3 hours, strict

Sit for the full duration, then log lost marks by unit and by reason (concept, calculation, presentation).

4. Board PYQs last

Finish with the last 5 years' board papers. Aim for 70+ out of 80 in the final two weeks.

Class 12 Maths study plan, unit by unit

Timelines assume about 1.5 – 2 focused hours of Maths a day alongside school.

Step 1

Calculus (continuity, differentiation, applications, integrals, area, differential equations)

35 marksTimeline: 6 – 7 weeks
  1. 1Weeks 1 – 2: continuity, differentiability and all differentiation techniques; 50 NCERT questions minimum.
  2. 2Week 3: applications of derivatives — increasing/decreasing and maxima-minima word problems.
  3. 3Weeks 4 – 5: integration by substitution, parts and partial fractions; then definite integrals and their properties.
  4. 4Week 6: area under curves and differential equations (variable separable, linear).
  5. 5Checkpoint: a 35-mark calculus test from sample paper questions at 75%+.
Step 2

Vectors & 3D Geometry

14 marksTimeline: 3 weeks
  1. 1Revise dot and cross product with their geometric meaning.
  2. 23D: equation of a line, angle between lines and shortest distance — solve all NCERT examples.
  3. 3Solve every previous year board question on shortest distance; it repeats often.
Step 3

Relations, Functions & Algebra

18 marksTimeline: 3 weeks
  1. 1Relations and functions: one-one/onto proofs and inverse trigonometric principal values.
  2. 2Matrices and determinants: operations, inverse, and solving equations by the matrix method.
  3. 3Checkpoint: 20 short questions under 2 minutes each.
Step 4

Probability & Linear Programming

13 marksTimeline: 2 weeks
  1. 1Conditional probability, multiplication theorem and Bayes' theorem — write the events clearly first.
  2. 2Linear programming: draw neat graphs, shade the feasible region and check every corner point.
  3. 3Final checkpoint: two full timed sample papers, target 70+ out of 80.

CBSE Class 12 tuition — FAQs

Can Class 12 CBSE tuition also help with JEE or NEET?

Yes. Our Class 12 teaching covers the NCERT depth that boards test and the problem practice JEE and NEET need. Students preparing for both can choose a combined plan.

Which Class 12 Maths units carry the most marks?

Calculus carries about 35 of the 80 theory marks, followed by vectors and 3D geometry. Starting with calculus gives the best return on study time.

Are the CBSE sample papers enough for Class 12?

They show the exact pattern and marking style, so solve them first. Then add the last 5 years' board papers for more practice.

Is one-on-one tuition available for Class 12?

Yes. One-on-one classes give personal attention, a customised plan and personal doubt-solving. Group batches are the more affordable option.

Can students abroad join?

Yes. Classes are fully online, so CBSE students in the Gulf and other countries can join at times that suit their time zone.
