CBSE Class 10 Maths: unit-wise marks

UnitMarksWhat to prioritise
Number Systems6Real numbers, HCF/LCM proofs — quick, reliable marks.
Algebra20Polynomials, linear equations, quadratics, AP — the biggest unit; start here.
Coordinate Geometry6Distance and section formula — formula-direct questions.
Geometry15Triangles (similarity) and circles — practise proofs with full steps.
Trigonometry12Identities and heights & distances — high-frequency case-based questions.
Mensuration10Areas related to circles, surface area and volume.
Statistics & Probability11Mean/median/mode of grouped data and probability — very scoring.

Theory paper is 80 marks plus 20 internal assessment. Confirm the current year's curriculum at cbseacademic.nic.in.

CBSE Class 10 sample papers: how to use them

CBSE publishes official sample question papers (SQPs) with marking schemes every year. Download them from the official site, then use them in this order:

1. Read the marking scheme first

Before solving, read how marks are split inside long answers. CBSE awards step marks — writing the formula and substitution earns marks even if the final answer slips.

2. Solve one paper untimed

Attempt the first sample paper with the book closed but no clock. List every question you could not start — those are your weak units.

3. Then timed, in 3 hours

Solve the next papers in a strict 3-hour sitting. Check with the marking scheme and log lost marks by unit.

4. Repeat with previous year papers

After the official SQP, move to the last 5 years' board papers. Aim for 70+ out of 80 before the exam.

Class 10 Maths study plan, unit by unit

Timelines assume about 1.5 – 2 focused hours of Maths a day alongside school.

Step 1

Algebra (polynomials, pair of linear equations, quadratics, AP)

20 marksTimeline: 4 weeks
  1. 1Week 1: polynomials and zeros-coefficients relation; finish all NCERT exercise and example questions.
  2. 2Week 2: pair of linear equations — substitution, elimination and word problems; 20 word problems minimum.
  3. 3Week 3: quadratic equations — factorisation, quadratic formula, nature of roots; then arithmetic progressions (nth term, sum).
  4. 4Week 4: mixed algebra test of 25 marks from sample paper questions; re-solve every mistake the next day.
Step 2

Trigonometry (ratios, identities, heights & distances)

12 marksTimeline: 2 – 3 weeks
  1. 1Memorise the standard-angle table and the three identities; write them daily for a week.
  2. 2Solve all NCERT identity proofs, writing every step as the marking scheme expects.
  3. 3Draw a clean diagram for every heights-and-distances problem — most lost marks come from wrong diagrams.
  4. 4Checkpoint: 10 case-based questions from sample papers at 80%+.
Step 3

Geometry (triangles and circles)

15 marksTimeline: 3 weeks
  1. 1Learn the statements and proofs of the Basic Proportionality Theorem and tangent theorems — they are asked directly.
  2. 2Practise similarity criteria (AA, SSS, SAS) with 25 NCERT and exemplar questions.
  3. 3Circles: tangent length and angle questions; solve all previous year board questions on this unit.
Step 4

Mensuration, Coordinate Geometry, Number Systems

22 marksTimeline: 3 weeks
  1. 1Keep a one-page formula sheet for areas, surface areas and volumes; revise it every other day.
  2. 2Coordinate geometry: section and distance formula — 20 quick questions, target under 3 minutes each.
  3. 3Real numbers: practise the irrationality proofs and HCF/LCM word problems.
Step 5

Statistics & Probability

11 marksTimeline: 1 – 2 weeks
  1. 1Practise mean by the step-deviation method, median and mode of grouped data — the tables must be neat and complete.
  2. 2Probability: cards, dice and coins questions; list the sample space every time.
  3. 3Final checkpoint: two full timed sample papers, target 70+ out of 80.

CBSE Class 10 tuition — FAQs

Does Prepkunj offer CBSE Class 10 tuition for all subjects?

Yes. Group and one-on-one online classes cover Maths, Science and English for Class 10, with class recordings and study notes. Free self-study notes and tests are also available.

Is Standard or Basic Maths better for Class 10?

Choose Standard Maths if your child may take Maths in Class 11 (science or commerce with Maths). Basic Maths suits students who will not continue Maths. The study plan above follows the Standard syllabus.

How many sample papers should a Class 10 student solve?

Solve the official CBSE sample paper at least twice, plus the last 5 years' board papers. Quality matters more than number: check each one against the marking scheme.

Does the plan work for the second board exam attempt?

Yes. Class 10 students now have two board exam opportunities. For the second attempt, focus the plan on the units where marks were lost in the first attempt.

Are classes available for students outside India?

Yes. Classes are online, so CBSE students in the Gulf and other countries can join batches at times that suit their time zone.
