Is NCERT enough for Ray Optics and Optical Instruments in JEE?

NCERT covers mirror and lens formulae, refraction, total internal reflection, prisms and instruments — enough for most JEE Main questions. Add sign-convention drills, lens-mirror combinations and prism-deviation graphs from PYQs.

Common JEE questions on Ray Optics and Optical Instruments

How do I avoid sign-convention errors in the mirror and lens formula?
Measure all distances from the pole or optical centre, take the direction of incident light as positive, and put signs in only when substituting values.
What is the condition for total internal reflection?
Light must travel from a denser to a rarer medium, and the angle of incidence must exceed the critical angle, where sin C = 1/μ.
When is deviation through a prism minimum?
When the ray passes symmetrically (i = e). Then μ = sin((A + δm)/2) / sin(A/2).
What is the magnifying power of a telescope and a microscope?
Telescope (normal adjustment): fo/fe. Compound microscope: roughly (L/fo)(D/fe). Both formulae are asked frequently in JEE Main.
