Guide for NRI families
JEE for NRI students: eligibility, DASA/CIWG, centres abroad and preparation
Everything an NRI or OCI family needs to plan JEE Main and Advanced from abroad — who can appear, how the DASA and CIWG admission schemes work, where the exam is held outside India, and how to prepare on an overseas school schedule.
JEE Main is open to Indian citizens, NRIs, OCIs and foreign nationals. The core requirements, from NTA's information bulletin:
Passed (or appearing in) Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; students educated abroad qualify through their equivalent Class 12 qualification.
No age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced has its own age and attempt rules published each year.
OCI and foreign-national candidates should check the current bulletin for category-specific rules, which are updated from year to year.
JEE Advanced — the gateway to the IITs — is open to candidates who qualify through JEE Main, including eligible foreign nationals and OCIs.
Rules change year to year — always confirm against the current information bulletin at jeemain.nta.nic.in.
DASA and CIWG: the NRI admission route
There is no NRI quota in the IITs — IIT admission is by JEE Advanced rank alone. For NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes, NRI students use two schemes:
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) admits NRI, OCI and foreign-national students using the JEE Main rank, with fees denominated in USD.
CIWG (Children of Indian Workers in Gulf countries) reserves about one-third of DASA seats for students whose parent works in a Gulf country — at fees close to what Indian-resident students pay. For Gulf families, this is often the single most valuable route.
Both schemes run their own counselling rounds after JEE Main results; documentation includes the parent's employment and residence proof, passports and the student's Class 12 equivalence.
Our counsellors help families work out which scheme fits, what rank it realistically needs and what the total cost looks like — that conversation is free.
Exam centres outside India
JEE Main has been conducted in international cities including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh, Kuwait City, Muscat, Singapore and Kathmandu, with the official list published in each session's information bulletin. Centres can be added or removed between sessions, so confirm your city before registering. JEE Advanced is held at a smaller set of centres and has historically required travel to India for most overseas candidates — check the current year's announcement.
Preparing from abroad
JEE tests the CBSE Class 11–12 syllabus at a depth most overseas curricula do not reach, particularly in Mathematics and Physics. A workable plan for an NRI student:
Start with a diagnostic. A free diagnostic test shows which chapters are strong and where the gaps are.
Bridge the curriculum early. Identify which CBSE chapters your school syllabus skips and schedule them first.
Join a batch timed to your timezone. Our live batches are scheduled around the school day in your country, with recordings for every class.
Test against the national peer group. Weekly mocks benchmarked against students across India are the only honest measure of where a rank will land — see our marks vs rank guide.
See how this looks in practice on our PrepKunj Global hub, including fees in your country's currency.
JEE classes in Gulf, UK and US time zones
Indian JEE exams run on India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30), but your child studies on local time. Our live batches are scheduled after the school day where you live, and every class is recorded — so a clash with school or sport never means a missed lesson.

From English-medium schools abroad to JEE
JEE is written in English (and several Indian languages), so English-medium students are not at a language disadvantage. The real gap is syllabus depth in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. How it usually looks by curriculum:
CBSE schools in the Gulf — same NCERT syllabus as India; the work is adding competition-level practice and speed.
British curriculum (GCSE, IGCSE, A-Levels) — strong on concepts, but several NCERT chapters are thinner or missing; we map them and teach those first.
American curriculum (AP, US high school) — a later start on Class 11–12 depth; an early diagnostic is especially important.
IB Diploma — good analytical grounding; students need targeted NCERT coverage and timed multiple-choice practice.
Students from boards outside India may need an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities at admission time — start that paperwork early.
JEE preparation in Dubai, the US and the UK
Dubai & the UAE
Most families follow CBSE. Evening batches in Gulf time fit after school, and JEE has been held at centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah — confirm the current year's list with NTA. Children of parents working in the Gulf may qualify for CIWG seats.
A US evening is early morning in India, so live classes fit after school with recordings for weekends. There has historically been no JEE centre in the US — plan travel to India or a nearer international centre for exam day.
UK afternoons overlap Indian evenings, so after-school live classes are easy to schedule. GCSE and A-Level students get a chapter map of the NCERT topics to add. Check NTA's list for your nearest exam centre, as the UK has not usually had one.
No. IITs admit through JEE Advanced rank alone, and foreign nationals and OCI candidates compete under the rules published each year. The NRI-route schemes — DASA and CIWG — apply to NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes, not the IITs.
What is the difference between DASA and CIWG?
Both admit NRI students to NITs and other institutes using the JEE Main rank. CIWG — Children of Indian Workers in Gulf countries — reserves about one-third of DASA seats for students whose parent works in a Gulf country, at fees close to what Indian-resident students pay. DASA seats carry a higher, USD-denominated fee.
Can my child write JEE Main without travelling to India?
Yes, if NTA offers an international centre in your country that year. JEE Main has been held in cities such as Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Kuwait City, Singapore and Kathmandu. The official list is published with each session's information bulletin — confirm your city before registering.
When should an NRI student start JEE preparation?
Ideally from Class 9 or 10. JEE Main and Advanced test the CBSE Class 11–12 syllabus at a depth most overseas curricula do not reach, especially in Mathematics and Physics. Starting later is still workable — a diagnostic test first shows exactly how much ground needs covering.
