What BITSAT actually tests

BITSAT is the admission test for BITS Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. It is a computer-based test unlike anything else in the Indian entrance calendar: 130 questions in 180 minutes, no negative marking beyond a small penalty, and a bonus block of twelve extra questions if you finish the paper early.

It also tests two sections nobody else does — English Proficiency and Logical Reasoning — which are cheap marks for anyone who prepares them for even a few weeks, and lost marks for JEE students who ignore them until the week of the exam.

BITSAT's PCM syllabus follows NCERT Class 11 and 12 closely, so a NEET or JEE student is already most of the way there. The genuinely new preparation is the 30-question English and Logical Reasoning block.

Eligibility

Who can appear for BITSAT

Pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (Biology instead of Mathematics only for B.Pharm).
Minimum 75% aggregate in PCM/PCB and at least 60% in each subject.
Adequate proficiency in English as certified by the board result.
Only current-year and immediately preceding-year Class 12 candidates are eligible, with the previous-year candidates permitted to reappear as specified in the brochure.
Direct admission is offered to board toppers of central and state boards in the specified streams.

Marking scheme

+3 for a correct answer and −1 for an incorrect one. There is no section-wise time limit, so the exam is effectively a 180-minute resource allocation problem: the students who score highest are usually those who protect twenty minutes for the bonus block.

- Full 180-minute mocks on a computer screen, never on paper.
- Target roughly 110 seconds per PCM question and under 40 seconds per reasoning question.
- Practise the decision rule for skipping — one long question can cost you the bonus block.

Between the two sessions
- Treat Session 1 as the diagnostic and Session 2 as the score you are building towards.
- Fix section-level leaks identified in Session 1 rather than restudying everything.
- Keep Class 12 board percentage above the 75% and 60% cut-offs — eligibility failures cost seats every year.
